Canadian EV Rebates

Hands Holding Car and Money

BMW has long been at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution. Not only will you enjoy an efficient, eco-friendly, and ultra-luxe driving experience at the wheel of an EV like the BMW iX, but you may also be able to save some money on the selling price, thanks to the wide range of available Canadian EV rebates. There are Canadian federal EV rebates offered, as well as incentives at the provincial level. Get to know more about them in this guide from Pfaff BMW.

What is the iZEV Program?

The Canadian federal EV rebate program is called Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles. Designed to offset the purchase or lease price of eligible EVs and PHEVs, you can claim a point-of-sale rebate of up to $5,000 (EVs) or up to $2,500 (PHEVs), depending on your vehicle. EV owners from Oakville to Burlington and beyond can take advantage of this Canadian federal EV rebate program. And what are the iZEV program eligibility requirements? To qualify, your vehicle must:

  • Be a battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle
  • Be bought or leased for at least 12 months, on or after its eligibility date
  • Have an MSRP of less than $55,000 for passenger cars or less than $65,000 for higher-end trims; an MSRP of less than $60,000 for a station wagon, pickup, SUV, minivan, van, or special purpose vehicle or less than $70,000 for higher-end trims

British Columbia, Canada, EV Rebate

Now that you know what the iZEV program is, let us focus on province-specific EV incentives. In British Columbia, the Go Electric BC Rebate Program provides rebates of up to $4,000 on new electric vehicles. The exact amount varies based on vehicle type and buyer income.

As far as tax incentives, BC has raised the luxury surtax threshold to $75,000 for EVs, which can further help make luxury electric vehicles more accessible. Used EVs also qualify for a BC sales tax exemption.

Quebec, Canada, EV Rebate

The Roulez vert program offers up to $7,000 in rebates on new EVs and PHEVs and up to $3,500 on used all-electric vehicles. To qualify, the purchase or lease must occur in Canada and be for at least 12 months. Your vehicle must first be registered in Quebec, and the MSRP must be less than $65,000.

Ontario, Canada, EV Rebate

As of this writing, there are no Canadian EV rebates available at the provincial level in Ontario.

Nova Scotia, Canada, EV Rebate

Through the Nova Scotia Electrification Rebate Program, you can claim up to $3,000 off a new EV or long-range PHEV. Short-range PHEVs qualify for up to $2,000 off, as do used all-electric models. Used PHEVs are eligible for up to $1,000 off. With that said, keep in mind that pricing and features must meet certain standards to qualify for this rebate.

Manitoba, Canada, EV Rebate

Through 2024, the Manitoba government offers subsidies of $4,000 for new EVs and PHEVs and $2,500 for used models. Your vehicle must cost less than $70,000 and be less than four model years old. Subsidies are available first-come, first-served.

Alberta, Canada, EV Rebate

As of this writing, there are no Canadian EV rebates at the provincial level in Alberta. However, check with your local municipality and utility company, as local-level incentives may be available.

Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, EV Rebate

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has an EV program that gives you $2,500 off a new or used BEV or $1,500 off a new or used PHEV. Active until March 15, 2025, these rebates are awarded to vehicles bought from a licensed dealer in the province and registered in the province, and all qualifying vehicles must be bought or leased within the eligibility period. The minimum lease term required is 48 months.

Prince Edward Island, Canada, EV Rebate

The PEI EV Incentive Program offers up to $5,750 for new and used BEVs and up to $3,250 for new and used PHEVs. For lessees, the amount you receive will depend on the length of your lease. The discount is taken directly at the point of sale.

EV owners who buy outside of Prince Edward Island can apply for the rebate when they register their vehicle in the province.

Also, PEI provides $750 for the purchase and installation of a Level 2 EV charger or, alternately, to cover charging expenses for those who cannot install a charger.

Yukon, Canada, EV Rebate

If you live in the Yukon, you can claim a $5,000 rebate on a new BEV, PHEV, or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle or a $3,000 rebate for a new PHEV with a shorter range. An application and more information are available on the program website.

Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Canada, EV Rebate

The Arctic Energy Alliance will give you $5,000 towards a new BEV or PHEV or an extra $500 to put toward the cost of a Level 2 home charger. To qualify, you must live in a community served by the hydroelectric grid. Rebates are available until funding runs out.
